Website Analytics - Privacy First

Goodbye Cookie Banner, Hello GDPR compliant analytics. Why Google Analytics alternatives might be the way to go in 2026.

Introduction

You want to see the activity on your website, luckily, there are plenty of solutions out there that are simple to implement into the <head> of your websites HTML.
This blog will help you to understand which third party analytics solution is best for your website!

How do analytics work on websites?

Website analytics is the systematic collection, measurement, analysis, and reporting of data about how users interact with a website.

Main uses include:

  • Tracking visitor behavior (page views, clicks, scrolls, purchases)
  • Identifying traffic sources (search, ads, social, direct)
  • Measuring performance (engagement, conversions, revenue)

Google Analytics

Google Analytics began as an acquisition (Urchin), disrupted the industry by being free, dominated through deep advertising integration, then evolved into GA4 in the modern day. The platform has been a big habit to implement as a part of most website tools and coding stacks, this is mainly due to Googles brand creditability and range of services like google ads and google search console. The service is free to use and operates on any google account.

Where it falls short

Privacy is a big topic surrounding Google Analytics, it is often subject to GDPR scrutiny, data is usually processed outside of the EU, and cookie consent banners are required if the analytics is active on the website.

Google Analytics evolved in a pre-GDPR era where data collection norms were different. As global privacy regulations tightened, Google had to significantly adapt its infrastructure and compliance mechanisms, while newer analytics platforms were able to design privacy-focused architectures from creation.

In terms of functionality, ad blockers are seen to be blocking Google Analytics features more and more causing errors and underreporting.
GA4 specifically has a steep learning curve, which new and non-technical users may struggle to understand and utilise to it's full capabilities. The Google Analytics dashboard is also quite complex and will require technical expertise to navigate.

Where it can work for you

Google analytics can work for you if:

  • You want a free enterprise solution
  • You already have a Google Workspace setup for your business
  • You heavily use Google Ads
  • You predict a large scale web and marketing campaign
  • You need high quality AI support through Gemini and other Google services

Honourable Mention - Laravel Pan

Pricing - Free (open source addon)

If you're looking for an internal (no third party) analytics solution for PHP and Laravel websites, Laravel Pan might be the solution for you as it allows for click and hover tracking for specific elements on your website through JavaScript. Data is stored in a database table migrated once the addon is installed through composer require.

To track specific element integrations with Laravel pan, it's as simple as adding the data-pan="<tracking label>" variable to any element in html, for example:

<div>
	<button data-pan="tab-1">Tab 1</button>
	<button data-pan="tab-2">Tab 2</button>
</div>

Find out the simple developer setup process to integrate this by visiting the repository below.

Setup Score - 7/10 (Medium - requires knowledge in PHP, Composer and Databases - good for experienced developers that want an internal solution or specific analytics data)

Repository - https://github.com/panphp/pan

[!info]
All of the listed alternative analytics solutions state that they always or at least channel their hosting and data routing across EU infrastructure only, to align with EU data protection values (excluding Laravel Pan as this is based on your own hosting choices).

Conclusion

When considering your website analytics software/solution, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I want my analytics to be GDPR and other privacy law/act compliant?
  • How much data do I want from my website views/user?
  • What type of dashboard complexity am I looking for to measure my website analytics?
  • Do I want a cookie consent banner on my website?

This blog should have helped you answers these questions.
